Romania and Asia: A need for Further Development of Relations

Note by H.E. Mr. Seyed Hossein Sadat Meidani Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Dean of Asian Group

-On the occasion of the Day of Diplomacy of Romania-

Asia's cultural diversity, economic vitality, technological innovation, and geopolitical significance collectively underscore its pivotal role in shaping the global landscape, holding a critical place for the European Union and Romania. In the increasingly changing world, the collective influence of many Asian countries cannot be understated. With an approximate combined population of 4 billion people, the nations of this group constitute almost half of the global population. Together, these nations form a mosaic of cultures, economies, histories, and potentials that hold significant implications for global affairs. On this occasion, I present a comprehensive perspective on the common position of our countries concerning the paramount importance of Asia on the global stage, particularly for Romania.

On the one hand, the richness of Asia's cultural heritage is unparalleled. With many languages spoken and a multitude of religions practised, our nations foster cross-cultural understanding and cooperation. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites across Asia stand as a testament to the depth of our shared history and cultural significance. On the other hand, the geopolitical significance of Asia cannot be ignored, especially at the current time. Our shared commitment to dialogue and conflict resolution remains pivotal in shaping peaceful outcomes under international law.

Asia is one of the biggest cradles of culture and home to some of the world's earliest civilizations. The strategic geopolitical significance of Asia is shown in many aspects and one of them is that this region is one of the world's busiest maritime shipping routes. According to an IMF report, Asia currently holds 60% of the world's patents in digital and computing technologies, which are areas where Romania has strengths and is keen to enhance cooperation.

Moreover, Asia stands as an economic powerhouse, contributing significantly to the global economy. As of the latest available International Monetary Fund data in 2023, the combined GDP of the fifteen countries exceeds 34 trillion US dollars, representing a substantial share of the world's 105 trillion US dollars total GDP. Three Asian countries, with their rapid growth rates, are among the five largest economies in the world. Additionally, Asia is a crucial hub for international trade, being the world's largest exporter and importer of goods. According to statistics from 2023, Romania's economy, with a trade volume of almost 215 billion euros, recorded a volume of almost 29 billion euros in trade with Asia. There are many economic opportunities in Asia, and the economic opportunities in Romania and this region for Asian investors need to be facilitated.

In his speech earlier this year at the annual meeting with the heads of the diplomatic missions accredited in Romania, H.E. Mr. Klaus Iohannis, the President of Romania, stated, "We need an open and honest dialogue with partners on other continents, to understand their concerns and to identify ways forward together. Global problems require global action. Equally, we need stronger economic and investment relations. The year that has just begun will be an important one for reinvigorating our relations with traditional friends and partners in South and South-East Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America." Also, At the Diplomatic Conference in July 2024, Romanian foreign Minister, H.E. Ms. Odobescu reaffirmed Romania's interest in Asia.

I acknowledge that Asia's importance transcends our borders. Our combined strength, diverse cultures, economic prowess, and shared values position us as pivotal players in the global arena.

By nurturing cooperation, mutual understanding, and collaborative endeavours, Asian countries have the potential to contribute significantly to a world characterised by unity, progress, and sustainable development based on international law. As we navigate the complexities of international relations, our shared commitment to a brighter future will guide our collective actions.
